Camp Selah, Warwick, MA
6 WILSON ROAD
WARWICK, MASSACHUSETTS
INFORMATION:
Cell phones generally do not work at the camp. There is a land line available for emergencies, collect, or calling-card calls. It is located in the small chest near the electrical panel - the jack is to the left of the Water Heater switch. For incoming calls, the phone number for the camp is 978-544-9954.
The nearest Hospital is in Athol, about 20 minutes from the Camp. To get there, return to Route 2A and go East (left) through Orange into Athol. The Hospital is on the right as you leave the main business district of Athol.
The nearest store is Cumberland Farms in the center of Orange. A large supermarket is between Orange and Athol on Route 2A.
For a day-time hike through the woods, you can go past the Bunk House into the woods where you will be able to follow a fairly well defined path until you come to a clearing behind a house with large stained glass windows. At the road, turn right down the hill to the lake. That walk will take about 30 minutes. At night you can take a little longer (45 minute) route by going past the Camp on the gravel road up the hill - take a right at each intersection and again you will come back to the lake. If you have more time for hiking, drive to the center of Warwick by taking a left at the end of the road the camp is on, take another left onto Route 78, and park in the Mount Grace State Park parking lot on the left. The trail begins at the far left corner of the field. Be careful to note where that trail comes out onto a gravel road so you can find your way back. The gravel road will lead to the top of Mt. Grace where there is a Fire Tower. It takes about 45 minutes from the parking lot to the top.
DETAILS:
The switch for the kitchen ceiling light is above the stove. The bathroom light switch is below the window.
A propane gas tank for the grill is stored in the Chocolate House shower stall.
After using the large pancake griddle, do not wash with soap and water - while still warm, scrub it with a paper towel.
The oven may be lit underneath by a match. Once it is lit, the pilot should stay lit for subsequent uses.
The toilet in the main Cabin doesn't always flush the first time, even when the handle is held down. After the tank is refilled, try to flush again. The toilet tanks in the other cabins take a while to be refilled.
A foot air pump is in the shed for the inflatable boat - care should be taken so as not to drag the boat across beach stones. Boaters should not get in or out unless the boat is some distance out in the water; otherwise the vinyl will be torn.
A fire pit for a camp fire is adjacent to the Bunk House. Please use wood gathered in the woods - split and stacked wood is reserved for cabin Franklin Stove use.
When closing up the Camp, turn the refrigerator control dial to "Off" and leave the doors open one half inch. The dial is located inside and at the top of the freezer compartment. It is best for the electric cord to be left plugged in.
Please leave all kitchen cabinet drawers a couple of inches open (to cut down on mice making their homes there) - also leave the blanket chest cover open.
Firewood for the Main Cabin stove can be used efficiently by closing the door and twisting the air knob tight once the fire is well started. Kindling in the barrel should be used sparingly, and replenished with dry sticks once empty.
For night arrivals, a light can be turned on for the pump area by plugging in the electrical cord at the rear of the Bunk House. Care should be taken so that this light is not inadvertently left on.
In the summer, if windows have been opened, they should be closed and locked before leaving.
The Franklin Stove on the Main Cabin porch should not be lit until a stove pipe has been installed.
