When I Looked into His Eyes

by Julie L. McCarty

When I looked into his eyes,

his love overwhelmed me,

waves of emotion flowed,

because I was not what I ought to be.

His mercy reached out to touch my soul,

forgiveness and healing were there,

he gave me life when I deserved only death,

and took all my burdens and cares.

The angry mob had surrounded me,

their hearts were filled with hate,

they raised their hands to stone me,

it was the adulteress's fate.

They cast me upon the ground,

just moments away from death,

I cried and begged for mercy,

pleading with my last breath.

The Son of God defended me,

when I had no right to appeal,

he challenged my accusers,

writing their sins as he kneeled.

There was not one who was blameless,

for all were full of iniquity,

so they dropped their stones and left,

leaving the Master alone with me.

Go and sin no more, he said,

this man who saved my life,

but I wanted to serve him,

this one call Jesus Christ.

When I looked into his eyes,

there was a wondrous love for me,

he motioned for me to follow him,

with Jesus, I am free.
